Beyond that- supposedly, he imprinted on Bella's egg, I believe.

And maybe Smeyer could've done something with it if she chose to work in a completely "everything is predetermined" universe. She could've established that with Alice and her psychic powers. But no! She blew that when Alice herself said that the future she predicts can change if a person changes what they decide to do. Wow, did Smeyer royally screw that up.

So here's another thing that gets me- if the male carries the determining factor, couldn't the baby just as easily been a male?

And actually, if we want, we can correct Smeyer's biology fail and somehow make this love triangle even more fucked up. Jacob imprinted on Bella's egg? There's not enough genetic material in just the egg to form a complete person. If Jacob was imprinted on Renesmee since before she was conceived, he'd need the other half. He should have been in love with Edward, too.
