I don't use it when introducing myself, but I've gone as Serenyty online for SO long that when people say the word 'serenity' I look/turn.

I won't lie, I've used my handle in rl when I didn't want people to know my real name. |D (Well, Lora, at least, which is kind of a real name, so I guess I got lucky?) It feels kind of secret agent-y to me.

I've never said my fandom name irl. Calling myself "sootyowl" would be a little odd. I've also had other names across fandoms and years, so I don't feel as connected to my internet names as others might.

Yeah, I feel you, I've almost introduced myself by fandom handle to complete strangers. And my nickname is "Eel" which would be... very difficult to explain. |D

I have an RL friend who met me through an online friend, whose parents call me by my online name. I told my closest RL friend not to use my real name online, and now as a consequence not only does his boyfriend call me by it, but when I meet new people, they've already heard of me. By that name. Just laugh and say that it's your nickname.
dinogrrl: OMG DINOSAURS (OMG DINOSAURS)

I've almost done that a few times.

Actually...I'd kinda like it if I could get 'Dino' to stick as a real-life nickname. That's how I refer to myself in my head nowadays.

Everyone I know outside my family calls me Miff IRL... I'm a little off put by it, and I've had people stop talking to me because I'm not anything like my fursona.

I go by Raichu everywhere online and in a few select IRL situations (like a group of friends I had once where we decided to all use nicknames) and yeah like someone else said...I turn my head whenever someone says it. |D But while I'm ok with people IRL knowing my online name, I'm not so ok with the reverse.

What started as my go-to internet name eventually became a nickname that I use in a lot of situations. And then when it came time to legally change my name (transgender people get to name themselves, it's kind of cool) I seriously considered the Internet Name, but decided it was just a little too outre (the internet name is a real name, but from a different language and geographical area than me and it didn't go well with my surname [p.s. it isn't Japanese])

That's one of the things I like about my online persona. My fandom name sounds very similar to (and could be an anagram of with a few letters removed) my real name. So if I use my fandom name RL, people will just think I'm saying my name weird.

If this is really a problem that you have, then maybe it's time to detach yourself from being so rooted into the online world.

Secret 5 - Fandom names, real life names

[Picture is the drawing of two people talking. One of them says "Hi, I'm [start of struck out text] Enoby [end of struck out text] ... uh, Emily!"]

Sometimes I worry I'll slip up and use my fandom name in real life.
