According to a comment I saw on a Kotaku article, the "the hero dies" timeline comes from a fight that, in-game, is impossible to actually lose. I haven't played the game, so I'm not really sure what all that was about.

I've played it a few dozen times, and I'm coming up short on a fight that would fit that description. Maybe I can hunt down the article...

I just played through it literally for the first time over the last month and change, and I don't remember a fight like that. Unless it was just one of the ones that was so easy I never came close to losing and thus never realized you weren't allowed to lose it.

I think they just mean the final boss. Canonically, there is a timeline that "splits" from the end of that game in the scenario that the hero loses the battle, and there are later games that take place in this timeline, too.

I was always under the impression that it was a possible canon but you never actually experience it, since dying at any point in-game just results in a "game over" screen and starting out from where you last saved/last dungeon you entered. You can imagine, though, that it's a possible ending - if, say, you lost the final fight against Ganon(dorf) and were unable to loose his hold on Hyrule.

That was speculation. All Nintendo says is that during Ocarina of time, the hero was defeated.

Huh? I'm thinking that commentor didn't quite know what they were talking about, it comes from the final battle with Ganondorf.

•The Defeat of Link, the Hero of Time

The thief, Ganondorf, obtains the Triforce of Power and gets his hands on Princess Zelda. Link, the Hero of Time, challenges him for the destiny of Hyrule, but is defeated.

•The Seven Sages Seal Away the Demon King, Ganon

Finally, Ganondorf obtains the Triforce of Wisdom that dwells in Zelda and the Triforce of Courage that dwells in Link. Having obtained true power, he becomes the Demon King, Ganon. The Seven Sages of Hyrule, led by Princess Zelda, seal away the Demon King, Ganon, and the Triforce in the Sacred Realm as a last resort.

It has to be the fight with Ganondorf, since it mentions that he's already captured Zelda, but has yet to transform into Ganon.)

And it's definitely possible to get a game over in that. Granted, getting a game over then just results in having to restart, there's no cutscene that shows Link's death and Ganon taking his and Zelda's Triforce pieces, but it's certainly not impossible to lose. It's HARD to lose, especially if you have multiple healing fairies and potions, but not impossible.
