Sherlock Holmes

[personal profile] iceyred 2013-12-01 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
So I read some of the stories over Thanksgiving. I liked it way more than I thought I would. Holmes is actually a decent person, in contrast to every movie/tv show version of him I've ever seen. His relationship with Watson seems more equal, and the stories were really good. Thanks, FS, for convincing me to read the stories!

If anybody has any fic recs, I'll take 'em.

I'm glad you liked them!

Thank you! Have you read them? Who was your favorite character?

I have! I think I was in the thread trying to convince you to read them (if that was you we were trying to convince, and if I'm not hallucinating again).

I think my favorite thing about the stories is the atmosphere, really, even more than the characters. It's just so moody and foggy and thrilling and I can't get enough of it.

Yay! Good for you!

gardnerhill writes really, really, really good short/medium-length stories, in about a 60-40 gen-to-slash ratio.

*will come back later with a better list of recs, time permitting*

well I put recs here

Seconded. Gardnerhill is one of the best ACD Holmes writers out there. Also, methylviolet10b is pretty good, too.

this is a story of gardnerhill's with a surprise historical RPF character (for a classic literature fangirl, the best surprise EVER). Essentially, Watson drinks with Henry Wood and has conversations:
http://archiveofourown.org/works/874199

this is a hurt/comfort with Watson hallucinating about traditional folklore (written by mainecoon76):
http://archiveofourown.org/works/632992

a super short lolarious take on the Three Garridebs (gardnerhill again):
http://archiveofourown.org/works/531845

a 9k-something instant-headcanon remix of The Dying Detective (spacemutineer):
http://archiveofourown.org/works/552256

Actually, I myself would have been glad of some long, plotty ACD gen. But I know it's a rare thing.

YES methylviolet10b. Her fic does vary in quality, but even the worst of it is middling-good and she's so prolific and has so much variety it's fantastic.

I'm kind of tickled because those two happen to be probably the only two gardnerhill stories I DON'T like. And LOL CANON IS BUNK stories in general are almost universally a big fat "haha nope" for me. Wildly different preferences are wildly different, I suppose. But yeah, I still rec...pretty much everything else by her. She's got the faintly mythic quality of the characters and stories down in a really unique way. Here's her AO3 page: http://archiveofourown.org/users/gardnerhill/pseuds/gardnerhill

A handful of gen recs by other authors I nabbed:

http://prof-pangaea.livejournal.com/115264.html (telegrams between Holmes and Mycroft during the hiatus and holy shit so good)

https://www.fanfiction.net/s/5275683/1/A-Choice-of-Evils (another Hiatus thing between Watson and Mycroft that's pretty much the best characterization of Watson I've ever seen)

http://acd-holmesfest.livejournal.com/8628.html (methylviolet10b - a VERY good mimicry of a case-fic. Not precisely ACD-style, but fairly close, hitting a lot of Holmes tropes)

Also, even though it doesn't actually count as a fic, there's this wank report parody from fandom_wank that manages to characterize them better than a lot of actual fics:

(goddamn, I desperately need to organize my bookmarks.)

Yes, Sub Rosa is bloody awesome! At least we have this in common. I even love her time-travelling mistake (I can speak Russian, so I saw it immediately, but it only made everything better).

I'm kind of tickled because those two happen to be probably the only two gardnerhill stories I DON'T like

a fortuitous guess is fortuitous. But seriously, how did I even manage to do that. I mean, it's 1/(55!/53!2!)=1/1485 chance. 1/1485. 0.0006734.

I really, really like A Choice of Evils, too. IA that hiatus!Watson is all too often portrayed inadequately. Either he ends up as a depressed angsty teenager or as a homi- and suicidal maniac.

ETA: I just saw the the case fic is The Adventure of the Better Angel! Yay for another coinciding favourite! But pity that I didn't get to read another ACD case fic.

ETA2: there's this wank report parody from fandom_wank that manages to characterize them better than a lot of actual fics

this is hysterical. Totally IC. Thank you so much.

Well, I haven't read every single one of gardnerhill's fics, so it's not QUITE that small a chance ;)

(I think Star Trek and Doctor Who overexposure for many years has destroyed my ability to appreciate historical RPF cameos for the sake of historical RPF cameos, unfortunately.)

Do you prefer slash or gen? Or are you indifferent?

Yes. ^.^

Seconding the recs for methylviolet10b. She writes so much fic (most of it short) that you'll be swimming in it for days. And a lot of it is explicitly attached to canon stories too.

Re: Sherlock Holmes

(Anonymous) 2013-12-01 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
How much have you read? Because a lot of fic requires you to know the specifics of The Empty House and The Final Problem.

Congratulations! What story is your favorite so far?

The worst fic on However Improbable is better than the best fic on AO3 simply because they have standards and requirements for posting.
