yeah my sister and I used to joke that, while all the respectable writers turn in their graves, Doyle just jerks his moustache. Or it falls off every time somebody does something stupid with his characters.

but then we also thought that Tolstoy and Dostoevsky could jerk their beards and that Pushkin could flap his sidewhiskers and then it got out of control

This is a great comment. For some reason, reading about all those beards made me think of Civil War Generals.
