My dad's side of the family is like this. And all of their friends and extended family are like it too. They were like this before 9/11 but after it just exploded and is the gift that keeps on giving. It is really really obnoxious and I am happy that you have escaped experiencing it.

The town I grew up in had a large vocal crowd that was the OTT sort of aggressive patriotism too. Same for the town I went to college in. Maybe I'm just unlucky and those types flock to me, and you've been lucky to avoid it.
