I just want to remind everyone that in the original canon, Sherlock coos at, tickles, and plays with a baby. He's not a cold, cruel, sociopath who doesn't understand human emotion.

I think this comment is in the wrong place (should go under the subthread above) but...well...yeah...

...also, he rhapsodizes eloquent about flowers, fog, and music, acts incredibly considerately towards his clients to put them at ease, shuffles around muttering to himself in worry when he knows a client may be in danger, and constantly addresses Watson with terms of affection. And when he's rude, he's generally either a) thoughtlessly so due to being distracted, or b) sarcastic (often in a way that's meant to go over the heads of everyone but Watson.) Also, he doesn't need to snark at and insult people he doesn't like to defend himself. He's perfectly content to smile at them indulgently and wave them away.
