Well, I think Holmes fandom has always been a bit whackadoodle. When Doyle killed him off, a bunch of young men and women wearing black marched on The Strand in protest. Just imagine if they had had access to tumblr.

I think that's a myth. Some did wear black armbands, and a lot did send angry letters of protest, but I don't believe there were any marches.

But yeah, even so, Holmes fandom has always been nuts. I mean, people write multiple essays about how many wives Watson had.
