What I don't get (and never have, with fandom woobifying) is why make excuses for such characters at all? Most of the villains I like, it's because they're wrong, not despite it. I enjoy them doing things I could never do myself or condone a real person doing; it's cathartic for my Id.

I haven't watched this show, but considering this is Angela Bassett I can pretty much guarantee I will adore her character whatever the hell she's doing, but I don't have to to justify her actions to appreciate a black woman being a boss at evil.

Seriously THIS! Fiona Goode, Delphine LaLaurie, and Marie Laveau are all evil and manipulative in their own ways. That's kind of the point. That's why their actions to accomplish their goals are seen as so horrific in American Horror Story!

Part of their horror is how they corrupt others around them to meet their own ends. Fiona tried to corrupt the girls under her charge and already had Spalding twisted around her finger. Marie is corrupting Queenie. And Delphine corrupted her previous coven before they were all executed. The thing that makes Fiona and Marie dangerous now is they don't care about who they corrupt really, just as long as they get what they want.

Personally, I enjoy Marie and Fiona as villains because they do have moments of humanity, such as Marie's anger towards the lynchers who hung the little boy or Fiona giving life to the dead baby. But regardless of these moments, they are meant to be evil. And it will be interesting to see the consequences of what they have done.
