"Better" himself? So Will ending up in an institution is "bettering" himself?

Well, yeah. In Hannibal's world. Because in his mind, he's thissssssss close to getting Will to treat his visions like the inspirations they are. Hannibal thinks of himself as the pinnacle of well, everything. So to help Will become like himself is making Will better than what he was.

I'm not saying it's not incredibly fucked up, but all these little things Hannibal does, I don't get the impression that he's thinking of how he can break Will for shits and giggles, but how he can mold Will. Like, when he's with his therapist in one of the later episodes and actually seems agitated that he might not be able to complete Will's treatment. 'Treatment' being getting Will to commit/believe he's committed murder, but Hannibal really wants to help Will. Hannibal is horrible and evil, and he's kills if you look at him funny, but Heaven help you even more if he actually likes you.
