I remember this one time on a fandom meme I was heavily involved in, someone posted in the discussion post and was like "Guys, I don't know what to do! I have this idea for a story, but there aren't any prompts for a story like that for me to fill! What should I do?"

And instead of saying "Just write the fanfic and post it on your journal/blog/preferred fanfiction site", several people replied saying that the anon should leave a prompt that described the fic they wanted to write, and then wait a little while, and then fill it.

I can get that, tbh. Posting a fic to your journal/blog/etc and posting a fic as a fill on a kink meme are two different sorts of fandom involvement, and some people prefer the latter sort. It might also be that they wanted the meme to appear more active.

Oh, they didn't have to worry about this meme "appearing more active". It's been extremely active for years and is still going strong now. XD

And yes, it is different sorts of interaction, but I'm just baffled that no one said "You know, you can just write a story if you want to write a story, people have been doing that since before any kink meme ever existed..."

They might have felt that it was too kinky a premise for them to be comfortable with unless it was for a prompt that "somebody else" asked for.

I'm surprised that nobody suggested they just write it without involving the kink meme, but I'm even more surprised that they didn't realize they could leave their own prompt in the first place. People do that all the time!

If I remember right, it was long plotty gen, actually. (This kink meme is very rarely actual kink. XD)

Yeah, I mean the context was basically

OP: Guys, can you help me find a prompt that fits this idea? [story details] I've been all over the meme looking for a prompt I could write this for, but maybe I missed something? I really really want to write this story, but I can't if no one's requested it! What do I do?
Assorted Anons: I hate when that happens - great story idea that no one on the meme has requested. You can always request it yourself and wait a couple days and then write it, though!
Me: .......... (Whatever happened to just, you know, writing a fic because you wanted to write it?)

I am myself "guilty" of requesting things to write them myself because I wanted to do so anon and so on, so I get the reasoning of why someone might want to specifically write on the meme... but that wasn't the vibe I was getting here at all, so I was rather baffled at the apparent widespread belief that fic only can happen when prompted. XD

I just remember that very amusing prompt on the Avengers kink-meme quite a while back, where someone requested a crossover with Mayhem from the Allstate commercials. I think it got at least two fills.
