1) A grizzled and slightly creepy detective is forced out of retirement because he's good at killing people whose only real crime is being different.

2) An asshole who wears sunglasses at night betrays his job for his pacifist brother and ends up talking to computers and weird people with a lot of money.

First one is certainly Blade Runner, dunno about the second one though

Talking swords, power-hungry priests, and fathers possessed by supposedly dead historical dictators oh my!

I think some people missed the part about making it unflattering.

1. human reduced to disposable lab rat, lives in isolation, forcibly abused

2. bunch of kids with deadbeat dads shoulder burden of responsibility no teen should have to face

3. boy forced to mature quickly, works eagerly towards a victory that will almost certainly lead to his death (I say almost certainly b/c I don't know how it ends yet)

4. quiet village boy constantly forced into life of violence and danger with little guidance and primitive weaponry

5. girl finds freedom, but only at the cost of losing her boyfriend and her dad. male protag's girlfriend also dies. lots of gang violence is involved. (bonus points to anyone who gets this one. it's relatively obscure)
