Anime didn't downplay Ymir/Christa we just haven't gotten to that point in the story.

If there is a second season we'll be seeing a helluva lot more of it.

That is going under the assumption the anime don't continue to throw Levi in where he doesn't belong like they have been doing in the last episodes of SnK.
