That doesn't sound like "ship and let ship." It sounds more like "stop not liking a couple that I love."

Other people might get other things out of the character interactions. Or they might just loathe one half of the couple. Or it could be prettiness. Anyway you cut it, it seems narrow-minded to assume that there's "wanting to ship het at all costs" afoot.

This! Thank you! That ship het at all costs thing is fucking ridiculous imo. Besides, isn't Christa's sexual orientation ambigious at best? I'm not in this fandom, but that's what I've heard. If so, then I don't see what that big deal about shipping her with a guy is. I suppose I could understand getting upset about shipping Ymir with a guy. Though from what I've heard, seems to be simply be Christa-sexual.

AYART

Aw man, I wish I knew more about the series other than that there is a guy named Levi, there are m/m, f/f, and m/f ships, everyone seems pretty down on the m/f shippers for not liking what the other groups like, and that the manga art is terrible.

(Although those gifs of the anime art are pretty enough to make me rethink not watching the anime.)

Regardless, enough straight characters get shipped as gay or bi that a gay character getting shipped as straight or bi doesn't particularly bother me.

(But from a writing standpoint, I have to admit that an ambiguous sexual orientation or a specific-character-centric orientation wouldn't stop me from writing all sorts of random pairings of many and varied orientations for either character. I really like interesting character dynamics and reading/writing rare pairs, though.)

SA

I started to read the manga before the anime was even announced and sort of forgot about after getting a few chapters in. The art didn't bother me much, but it made it hard for me to tell the characters apart. Tbh I'm not sure if I want to give the manga another try, but that's more because I've been spoiled and don't care about the direction the plot took. Might give the anime a shot since it serms it cut off before then.

The ship wars in the fandom seem so ridiculous but when are they ever not? I enjoy watching them though. Anyway, it doesn't bother me so much either, especially if they're shipped as bi.
Mostly because I am bi. Though I can understand why some people would get upset about it.

I say write and ship what you want so long as you aren't an asshole about it. If I ever got into this fandom, I'd probably be on the rare pair train though. The juggernaut pairings that fandom goes gaga over tend to bore the hell out of me.

Argh, meant to put Ayrt instead of SA.

AYRT

You did read the part where I admitted that Christa/Reiner had some ship tease-y interactions, so I can see why people might like them together, right? That ship I don't find all that objectionable, as it at least has some basis, and I can imagine some ways people could make it interesting.

But you have to admit that shipping Ymir (a character explicitly stated to not be interested in men and is canonically in love with another girl) with Berholtd, someone who she has had next-to-no interactions with prior to the most recent chapters (and people were shipping them long before), is hard to see any other way than people wanting to pair everyone off neatly and heterosexually.

If people don't like Christa/Ymir, that's fine, but it's not like they have to ship Ymir with a dude just because of that, you know?

I have to admit nothing!

I have no problems with other people's shipping choices, including the decision to have Ymir bang a dude and like it. As people up-thread have pointed out: sexuality is fluid, bisexuality exists, and if you don't like it, you'd be better served not reading it than being all mean-spirited and judgy and ruining someone else's fun.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-04 02:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure if you're misunderstanding my point, or if I'm just explaining it badly (haven't been sleeping well the last couple of days). But I'll try again, because why not.

Yes, sexuality is fluid and bisexuality exists and even people interested wholly in one gender can find exceptions. I'm not denying that's all true, and I think it's fine to explore those things in fanfic and what not. But I'm talking more about Ymir/Berholdt as a ship, and why it specifically bothers me. When a person takes two same-sex couples best supported by canon, and splits them both up so that all four characters are now in het relationships, despite at least two of those characters blatantly saying they weren't into that? Yeah, I'm gonna think that's weird! I'm not gonna bother anyone about it or think their homophobic or anything, but it does make me uncomfortable.

If someone genuinely likes Ymir/Berholdt on it's own merits, then great, more power to them! I'd actually be really interested in hearing their thoughts on it. But all that I've seen of the ship comes across more as 'keep Ymir and Berholdt conveniently out of the way', and the fact that doing so pairs the only girl in the series canonically stated to not like dudes with a dude leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
