Can anybody tell me where to find good programs for making gifs? I can't afford photoshop and I'm having problems with gimp.

This one is free and is through Cnet. I've never used it, but if you don't like it you haven't spent any money

Ugh, I feel your pain. I use a torrented copy of Photoshop CS2, and it's useful, but I've had major problems making gifs sometimes. I usually use gifsoup, but my god it's shit.

I use Photoscape a lot - it's not perfect, but it's pretty easy to use~

If it's adaptable to what you do, Gifcam is really nice.
