Dinner plans, FS?

[personal profile] dancing_clown 2013-12-04 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
I'm hungry, but I have no idea what I want to eat. I've been trying to eat better these last few days -- when I get fast food, it's a grilled chicken sandwich with baked potato -- but mostly I've been eating at home more often, and plenty of fruits and veggies.

But I'm out of meat (and really, pretty much everything but a handful of raw broccoli), and I'm at that point where I'm not exactly *hungry* yet, but I've passed the point where it would be a good idea to go to the store (plus, then I'd have to clean my kitchen which would only delay the eating.

I had a cold sandwich for lunch, so I don't want Jimmie Johns or Subway. My other options are Qdoba, Taco Bell, Taco Johns, Freddy's, McDonald's, Wendy's and some regional fast-food places few probably know (Spangle's and Braum's, if you're in the midwest).

Give me your vote on where I should go (or tell us what you're eating, so when I do go to the store, I have some ideas of what to buy).

It's my mother's birthday so we're going out to a really, really nice Italian restaurant. I'm excited.

As for you... I don't recognize Taco Johns or Freddy's, but I mostly don't really like the places I do recognize, so I recommend Freddy's or one of the local places (or maybe Qdoba).

Man, that doesn't sound like an appetizing list. I'd go with Subway - literally the only restaurant on that list I like (of the ones I recognize) - but I can totally understand not wanting to if you had a cold sandwich for lunch.

Curious: which state are you from? I'm in Indiana and I've never heard of Spangle's or Braum's (or Freddy's for that matter).

Tonight I made a pizza for the first time! Er, I didn't really "make" it so much as put it together - Pillsbury crust, pre-packaged pizza sauce and mozzarella cheese, and canned olives - but it was still fun. It wasn't bad, but I didn't get the cheese-too-sauce ratio right. Oh well, next time I'll try to make it better! I'm also eating some of the super yummy green grapes I bought at the store today and will probably have a frozen fruit bar in a minute for dessert (Blue Bell frozen Key Lime bars are amazing).

Kansas. Spangles is I think just in the state, and maybe western Missouri. They're really tacky with their 50s nostalgia, but also really tasty (and greasy). Braum's is in Kansas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Texas and got it's start as an ice cream shop and dairy store before selling decent burgers and amazing fries.

Freddy's...I'm less familiar with. I hadn't even heard of them before these last couple years. But apparently it's pretty well-spread. And I just saw that they have a pumpkin pie concrete, which, I mean, it's not healthy, but I just had a slice of pumpkin pie get thrown away at the office on Sunday, I've been lamenting it ever since, and the only nonhealthy thing I've had today was *one* chocolate-dipped Ritz cracker, so...that just might be where I go.

I don't make pizza that often, but when I used to...it just always seemed like it should need more sauce than it does, so they were always really sloppy.

Yeah, I tried to use the amount of sauce it called for, but it wasn't enough (and I ate some of the dough beforehand too!). I also put too much cheese on mine.

Wendy's sounds so much better than the dry, overcooked, marinated-in-something-out-of-a-bottle chicken I have to look forward to. I vote for that.

If you have some eggs and flour around, why not make broccoli tempura? :o Or broccoli tortilla/omelette if there's no flour. Minimal mess, and it's delicious.

I kind of ate a lot of broccoli with my lunch, and I'm feeling a little done for the day. But I'll keep that in mind for tomorrow, because I do have eggs and flour! :)

Oooh, awesome :D I can't comment on fast food, since the only kind of fast food I ever eat is pizza, but if you'd like, I can look for some nice recipes you can make with broccoli for tomorrow.

(The tempura sauce, if you don't have all the fancy ingredients, you can whip out a substitute with soy sauce, white wine, a little bit of oil and a little bit of honey. Bring to boil and let it simmer for some minutes to evaporate some of the alcohol, and it's done :3)

Yay! I'm glad <3 Tempura is delicious and REALLY EASY, it's one of my favorite ways to make veggies "al dente" with a crunchy twist. If you want the bootleg sauce to taste better, try to use sesame oil if you have it in your kitchen; but with the ingredients I listed you should have no problem. And since that sauce is a matter of taste, just mix everything to your liking. (Just remember soy sauce is VERY salty, and you want it to be salty-sweet).

I'll definitely give it a try! It'll have to be in the spring, though, since i just finished grocery shopping for the last time this semester. I have most of the ingredients on hand, except the white wine and the sesame oil. It'll def be fun though! *quietly bookmarks thread*

It doesn't have to be fancy wine! A small box of white will be alright. And way cheaper than Mirin.

I wish you success when you try your hand at it! :D

Go to Qdoba, because I can't. I moved thirty minutes away from the nearest Qdoba and haven't had Mexican gumbo since. I'm jonesin' bad.
