I personally thought the Stephen Fry version was perfect -- for RDJ's Sherlock Holmes/Ritchie's movies. I believed they were brothers immediately. Of course, I wouldn't care for him at all in an adaptation that had a different sort of tone, or had a more canon-ish version of Holmes. But for those specific movies, with that specific semi-farcical tongue-in-cheek tone, and as the brother of that specific incarnation of Holmes? For that, Stephen Fry was utterly perfect in all his ridiculous Oscar Wilde-ish insanity.

Even if you don't like the movies, admit it -- a more serious and dignified Mycroft would have clashed badly.
