It depends on the kind of car you drive, and I think there's been some kind of legislation to remove the worst danger, but on a lot of cars, the bottom of the trailer door is about level with your head during a crash. The trailer also juts far enough from the wheel base that a smaller compact car might not even really lose any speed from the crash until your windshield hits steel.

Yep, that's what I heard. You can be decapitated by it, apparently. (Or if not that I imagine you could sustain enough head trauma to be killed immediately.)
