Having watched the movie, I felt the narrative suffered a lot from being two separate major plotlines for two different slammed together into the same two hours -- and Loki's plotline significantly outshone Thor's, imo (whether because of the actor's scene-stealing abilities, the flashier atmosphere of Asgard, or just the character being more interesting is a matter of opinion). I suppose other people may have different positions, but that was certainly my take the first time I watched it, coming in as someone who'd never heard of Tom Hiddleston and had no feelings about him.

I agree with the "two plotlines thing," though I actually found Loki uninteresting and very "meh" as a villain. (I'd never heard of Hiddleston before either) ... I actually didn't mind Thor himself, but didn't buy his romance with Jane ... But I digress.

It's so interesting how, even though obviously we all saw the same movie, afterward it sometimes doesn't seem as though we did.

It's very true about it seeming like we all watched different movies; I guess people pick up on certain elements that resonate with them, and it sort of spins out from there.

I'm probably going to get called a "Loki stan" by some bored anons for this, but in the first movie, I actually had a hard time seeing Loki as a villain at all, honestly. I found it really interesting how he started out at the beginning of the movie doing things that he thought seemed reasonable enough, and the consequences of each step pushed him a little farther until he was completely out of his depth and felt emotionally backed into a corner, and the next thing you know he's trying to destroy a planet.

That's probably why I found his story arc more interesting than Thor's, honestly -- Thor's character development felt really rushed and glossed-over (probably due in part to having to share a movie with Loki's storyline), while I could see and clearly recognize each step in Loki's narrative arc. By the end of the movie, I felt like I understood Loki better than I understood Thor (which is probably not ideal if Loki was supposed to have been the villain and Thor was supposed to be the hero).

But I should probably stop babbling about this since you mentioned you didn't find Loki interesting to begin with. Oops.

Nah, no worries. I followed along, and I think I understand how you can feel as you do.

Yeah, he just didn't click for me, either as a Big Bad or as a Sexy Misunderstood Anti-hero. Don't know why.

I ought to make a secret admitting that when people at my house watch that movie, I only pay attention to the scenes with Heimdall. Because I found him rather awesome.

I really liked Heimdall in the second movie, where we got to see a bit more of him as a person. I had kind of a hard time connecting with him in the first one, so I like that he got a bit more development (as much as any of the minor characters did, at least) in TDW.

Really, I think they need to make a Thor movie that just takes place on Asgard, so they can flesh out characters like Sif/W3, Heimdall, etc. as entire people more. (The scenes on Asgard have always been more interesting than the Earth scenes in the Thor movies anyway, imo.)

Seconded, absolutely.
