Re: When people not in fandom ask you about fandom things

I usually don't talk about fandom things to people unless they're in fandom themselves. I hate explaining things to people and I'd rather have mutal discourse about something else.

My mom tho, is kinda fandomy but not. Like she KNOWS fandom stuff and will randomly bring it up, but doesn't participate in fandom. It kinda blows my mind sometimes. She knows a lot about Supernatural fandom and DW. She also called Yugi "bondage boy" when I was into YuGiOh when I was younger, and she watched DBZ with me.

She knows all about fic and art, but stays away from it. She likes talking about fandom going-ons with me too. I feel like I have to shelter her from the darker things in fandom tho as she's a gentle soul.

TL;DR My mom isn't in fandom but has learned about fandom through osmosis and keeps up with it for me.

That sounds a little like my Mum.

Mum know a fair bit about Fandom due to me chattering, though out of respect for her preferences, I don't go into huge details about some aspects.

I try not to go into too much depth. I once told her there was a person who submitted a spn incest thesis paper in our area and she looked at me in horror. I'm still not sure if she totally believed me or not. She did say tho that she hopes whoever read the paper survived the ordeal, haha.

My mother has the "love the sinner, hate the sin" view of homosexuality, so to keep the peace, I try not to go into slash much, though she does know I read it, and probably knows I've read incest fic too.

My mom knows about slash. She doesn't actively ship a slash pairing or anything, but she knows there is a subsection for fandom for it. She also bought me my first yaoi manga as a teen. I still can't believe that (I did ask for it, but it doesn't seem like the type of thing she would have been willing to buy for me as a pretty straight laced woman. She still fast forwards though tv and movie sex scenes). Oh! Once she caught me reading a NC17 HP slash fic back in the day and grounded me for it. But then She bought me the NC17 yaoi manga years later. Parents are confusing characters.

My mom is also really into using the term "bromance." When she uses it she smiles and looks at me like "ha! Your mom is amazing and totally used that right." She can be pretty cute sometimes, for a mom.

"stays away from it" my ass. She's a live one all right, she's just sheltering your gentle soul. Confront her if you dare.

Nope. She knows about fandom, but I know she doesn't read fic or do art things. She is in more of the alien and myths part of the internet. She listens to a lot of podcasts. She also did nanowrimo one year -- original story. She knows and embraces my fandomy ways, but she's not a fandomer herself.
