I don't judge Topanga too harshly for not choosing Yale... It's been a few years since I've seen it, but I recall her analyzing the situation from many different angles before she decided not to attend college there. Her relationship with Cory was one of the factors she considered, but it wasn't the ONLY factor. Again, it's been a while since I've actually seen the material, but the impression it left on me wasn't that Topanga gave up on Yale to be with some guy, but that she decided that Yale wasn't the right choice for her.
