The problem is, the person you KNOW you want to spend the rest of your life with when you're 19 or 20 may not actually be the person you really want to spend the rest of your life with, because at 20 years old you've barely experienced anything of the world outside of high school. You're technically an adult, but in reality there's so much YOU that's not fully developed yet that it's simply not rational to believe that your first love will definitely be the person you grow old and die with. Chances are that it will not work out, so it's foolish to make life-changing decisions (and yes, where you attend college can be a life-changing decision not just in terms of a degree) based on your high school boyfriend.

Likewise, going to a different college than your loved ones isn't choosing to NOT have them in your life. It might make a relationship more challenging, but it's not impossible. If people love you, they're going to love you whether they see you every day or if you're living hundreds or miles away.
