Yeah, he essentially forced Dean into a maternal role at a young age. Dean had to go beyond what a normal brother should have to when taking care of Sam. It's a big reason why he has such low self-esteem. His father never recognized his achievements outside of hunting and protecting Sam.

Sometimes the show kind of tries to bring up that John was a shitty father, but it quickly ends up being dismissed and not really delved into.

Yeah. Or like the scene where he talks about the weekend Sam ran away. And he says "Well, you don’t remember, do you? You ran away on my watch. I looked everywhere for you. I thought you were dead. And when Dad came home…" and makes this face:

You can't tell me he wasn't abused.

Damn, yeah, that part was sad. :( I don't understand the people who get super offended when people point out that John was a shitty father who is responsible for a whole bunch of Dean's issues because it's freaking laid out.

IA. But it always gets me that the other half of the equation is ignored. Sam ran away and being on his own, living rough was supposedly one of his best memories. What does that say about his home life?. Oh, boys.

Don't you know that Sam was spoiled and pampered and had a happy childhood? And that he owes Dean big time for forcing Dean to take care of him? At least, that's what the Deanstans insist.

I'm still trying to figure out that particular logic. Sam was sitting in the same car as Dean, lived in the same shitty motels, was forced to train for combat at a young age along with Dean, etc.

Happy and spoiled might be pushing it, but "pamper" is relative. Canon states Dean pampered Sam in some ways, most notably in that he didn't tell him what happened when he ran away and such.

Dean stans take it a little too far, but it is canon that Dean was forced into a maternal role towards Sam, while he himself didn't have anyone to take care of him. For a kid, emotionally, it makes an enormous difference. Sam had someone he could trust to look after his well-being, Dean didn't.

Damn, yeah.

Watching Dean talk about John in any way, shape, or form makes me all sorts of shades of uncomfortable. Especially when Dean tries to defend him and kind of laughs it off as not being too bad, when I'm kind of squirming in horror.

I don't see how anyone can argue that John WASN'T abusive. Someone doesn't have to have the shit beaten out of them to be abused.

TMI but I was never physically or sexually abused, just emotionally (very distant, barely functioning alcoholic father and a mother who pretty much made me raise my sister AND her), and let me tell you, that's just as bad as physical.

I think the reason I like SPN so much, and the reason I relate to Dean so much as a character, is because I see a lot of me in him. I can remember being ten years old and having an eight year old sister to take care of with no money, no food in the fridge, and no parents at home (Dad on a bender, Mom "running away" for a few weeks yet again and not coming home). Not fun, definitely abuse.
