What fics have you read recently that you'd rec?

Because I can't get enough fic rec threads, tell me what you've read in the last week or so that you liked.

Pretty damn good MLP fic writer, goes for more friendship centred fic instead of the usual fare.

BBC Sherlock, anyone?

[personal profile] dreemyweird 2013-12-07 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, I haven't made new bookmarks in like forever. Because my main active fandom (ACD Holmes) is kind of slow, so there's little new stuff that can be called exceptionally good (and I already rec'd the ones I did consider high-quality). I think I quit Elementary, and besides, they seem to have switched to mediocre Joanlock flashfiction. Rivers of London is sloooow and smaalll. Although I did like this drabble: http://archiveofourown.org/works/1036031
and this non-drabble: http://archiveofourown.org/works/977293
They're just, hm, fluff, though the second one contains interesting pieces of worldbuilding.

Which reminds me: I haven't checked the gen part of Sherlock fandom in a while. Anybody got any recs? (I'd accept Ritchieverse, too, and pretty much any other adaptation as long as it is well-written and gen, but I suspect that Sherlock is the one fandom that has recently undergone a boost of fannish activity).

John Watson's Twelve Days of Christmas (Sherlock/John, Sherlock) http://archiveofourown.org/works/609765/chapters/1098620 It's the holiday season. John Watson needs money. Sherlock Holmes needs something else.

Perdition's Flames (Sherlock/John, Sherlock/Star Trek crossover) http://archiveofourown.org/works/891901/chapters/1721038
Sherlock would do anything to save him.
Risk anything. Give anything.
His money, his life. His soul.
What he does, though, is change both of their destinies forever.
Genetic re-engineering is the only option left.
It turns out researchers underestimated the life expectancy and potential abilities of genetically re-engineered subjects.

The British government and what would eventually become the United Federation of Planets, however, had not.

Epoch! (Charles/Erik, X-Men First Class AU) http://archiveofourown.org/works/956617/chapters/1872407 When Erik Lehnsherr decides to answer the sketchy job ad on the very last page of the Classifieds, meeting an insane billionaire who has no concept of reality and troubling memory loss is not at all what he expects. He also doesn't expect to meet Charles Xavier, who might actually be the love of his life if he could ever get around to admitting it to himself.

He also doesn't expect dinosaurs, but then again, who really does these days? FUCKING HILARIOUS

Merlin

'The Ivy Crown' by dayari (http://archiveofourown.org/works/247324) is a long, plotty canon-era Merlin/Arthur with a nice fairy tale feel. It was a VERY satisfying read.

'Candle, Cup and Casket' by Desiderii (http://archiveofourown.org/works/944029) is like everything I didn't want, but turned out to be everything I did want. It's an AU that's not actually an AU, it's got spaceships and aliens and cyborgs (ARTHUR!BORG) and it's plotty as hell. I've got a few chapters left, but I'm loving it so much that I'm reccing it now.

I've read so much Merlin fic that I liked this week, but those stand out just because they're long as hell.

Pantheon, an XMFC Ancient-Rome AU that is brilliant but unfortunately just went on hiatus :( http://archiveofourown.org/works/980620/chapters/1930793

Life in Reverse; Avengers; incomplete

Home is where you make it. Or, the AU where Loki falls to Earth after Thor, wanders around trying to work out what to do with himself, and somehow ends up working for SHIELD. (Mostly because supervillains are so plebian.)

http://archiveofourown.org/works/476291

The Best Laid Plans; Thor; complete

Loki's plans went even worse than in canon.

http://archiveofourown.org/works/1056628

Nine Steps; Thor (movie-myth mash up, Ragnarok); complete

It is said that Thor will slay the serpent and make nine steps before he falls dead.

The Serpent is dead and Loki sees his brother walking, and counts every step.

http://anshin-kinkmeme.livejournal.com/1584.html

A Broken Soul; Harry Potter, His Dark Materials fusion; complete

What exactly is the nature of a soul? And when Lord Voldemort so willingly split his own soul in half, what damage did he do to himself?

Love Each Other by singingtomysoul an GOB/Tony fic. It was a cute fic set after the end of s4. http://archiveofourown.org/works/840878/chapters/1602911

In the Air Tonight by Clarice Chiara Sorcha Loki/Thor. Really just a messed up hate smut fic.http://archiveofourown.org/works/382992

The Mating Habits of Snails by Shimegami Makoto/Haruka. Rin gets fed up with Makoto and Haruka's unmoving relationship. http://archiveofourown.org/works/920095/chapters/1786623

Five Times Roy Mustang And Riza Hawkeye Didn't Have Sex (But Wanted To)
by zauberer_sirin. The title really explains it. http://archiveofourown.org/works/61137

Seems more ACD than RDJ. But still inspired by a comment of RDJ's:

I got a lot of SNK fics for y'all.

When All We Have Is Falling: http://archiveofourown.org/works/1037922/chapters/2150791

Jean manages to get himself into a loop in time back to when he was first enlisted and sees Marco, whole and alive and still wishing to get into the military police, and realises this is his chance to save his best friend.

I know time loop fics can be pretty hokey, but I adore how very realistic and human Jean is in this; after discovering the loop, he backs out to the present, considers his options, and summons up the courage to try. After that he struggles immensely with the grim forknowledge of what will happen, and wanting to change things with precious little info he has. It's really good so far.

Strings: http://archiveofourown.org/works/955370/chapters/2152171

An AU where Marco is a failed secret service agent who ends up as a bodyguard to Jean as he's trapped in a conspiracy. It's a JeanMarco fic, but the romance is actually very well spaces between genuine intrigue and plot-twists, and just because you're familiar with the source material doesn't mean that you know how things will go.

I really like this one because Marco is usually written as a saint in stories, mostly because he died before he could develop, but this story turns Marco into a very real and flawed person who is still totally awesome. And badass. Seriously, don't fuck with Marco, he will end you.

It wasn't in the last week, it was last month, but It's a Mafia Life is a really good Hitman Reborn fanfic. It gets kinda dark, but I really liked the way they handled it. It's based on It's a Wonderful Life, which I know nothing about, but it's a Christmas fic and a friend recommended it to me and I read it straight through in two days.
