Mako had broken up with Korra before Asami made any moves. So there isn't anything wrong with Asami addressing her feelings for him. And Korra doesn't own Mako. He's allowed to make his own choices about it.

So, it wasn't okay for Mako to break up with Asami before him and Korra fought Amon, but it is okay for Asami to jump Mako the second she found out he was single?

Mako has always been Asami's crutch, that awful reunion only made it worse. Then you look into Asami's other plots in the season, Bolin makes Varick like her, Varick "saves" her company. All of her stories this season have been her crying and her having all her problems solved by men. This is problematic, and I just can't think it's anything but outright crap.

Lol you're one of those Makorra fans. Dude I don't even ship Mako and Asami. I just think your hate for Asami is ridiculous.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-07 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
Take a deep breath, calm down, and repeat after me: Not liking the way a character is written doesn't equal 'omghatenotmywaifuuuuu'

Asami's character was shafted big time this season, and it's cringeworthy.

DA

You're coming off as really obnoxious right here. The anon you responded to was being reasonable enough.

The anon you responded to was being reasonable enough.

DA, but no, not really? They did just dismiss character complaints as being because previous anon is a shipper, and the first word of their comment was 'lol'. Didn't seem like a very reasonable comment to me.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-07 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
Except no they weren't? They boiled down everything I said to 'lol u a shipper', which isn't reasonable at all.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-07 09:16 am (UTC)(link)
You weren't really being reasonable to begin with. You kind of threw a big tantrum about how unfeminist Asami was and kept contradicting your points just because she was in the way of your ship.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-07 11:42 am (UTC)(link)
Hint:I ship Borra, not Makorra. Your only strawman argument just failed you.

Asami isn't 'unfeminist'. Asami is a prop character that is used to further male character's plots, and that's a shame.

DA

I...don't see what's contradictory? And all you have to counter it is, "You ship something!"

Are you sure you're not the one taking a tantrum because they didn't like season two?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-07 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
As someone not involved in this fandom, both choices seem viable narrative choices on paper.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-07 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Team Korra has Korra, Bolin, Mako, and Asami. Asami did nothing this season besides have her issues solved by guys, then gets sidelined in the finale. When a female character's only screentime is devoted entirely to men, I think that's an issue.

AYART

Thanks for the info!

But, assuming that everything that you say about this Asami character is true, I'm fine with (male or female) characters like that, so long as they eventually grow out of it. Not everyone can start out badass or capable or whatever.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-07 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
But she was capable in season one. She had to fight her own father, using a giant robot, alone. She's a nonbender, and yet she still held her own. Now she doesn't do anything. She barely showed up, and every time she did it was to further Bolin, Mako, or Varick's stories.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-08 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe the writers thought that it was those other characters' turns to be the center of attention & get a bot of character development. It happens in ensemble pieces.

Or maybe she's taking a break from being tough to get over the emotional trauma of being on the outs with her family... and possibly killing her father.

Either way, I'm a lot less bothered by her showing up to further other characters' storylines (even/especially if they're male) since she's apparently already had a plotline of her own.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-08 08:46 am (UTC)(link)
If Asami is still a background prop by the season three finale, I'd say you're wrong. She didn't actually have any character development. In season one she's Mako's girlfriend, and is used as a way to put fake angst into the lovetriangle between Korra and Mako. She's the exact same character at the finale, she just has to fight her father. All of her ending scenes in Season1 are of her glaring at Mako and Korra, or of her telling her father he sucks. And it was obvious by the fact that Asami goes and dates Mako the very instant he's single, that her plot with him was never resolved either.

We know about Bolin, and Mako, and Tenzin, and Korra. But we know nothing about Asami aside from her driving a car and her taste in men. Asami is essentially nothing but fodder for the other characters up until this point. It's also telling that the only character that is used this way in Korra is the only other female 'group' character.
