I could see him being physically abusive by today's standards, which are much less accepting of light physical stuff like spankings or a smack across the face, but I don't think he would actually beat his kids.

This...people forget that standards do change, and vary wildly from one place and culture to another as well. Disciplinary measures that were considered perfectly normal, or only a little bit on the harsh side, when I was growing up would horrify a lot of people today. And hunter culture has a tendency to be old-fashioned and rough pretty much across the board.

(I think Bobby, for all he was presented as the archetypical hunter, was more the exception than the rule in some respects.)

True. I've had to explain to younger people on the Mad Men bb that no, Betty was not an abusive whackjob, she was fairly typical of the era.
