Everything bad people say about tumblr is magnified tenfold on SD. They have basically zero sense of fun there. These are the people who yelled at a black person for being racist because he used the phrase "separate but equal," and then when he expressed his shock and incredulity that they'd actually pull that shit, they completely ignored his concerns.

It's a ridiculous, joyless shithole that takes a trigger-happy bingo card approach to social justice issues. Every time somebody says something that slots into one of their ticky boxes -- and they have a lot of those -- there's an instant mod slapdown.

It didn't use to be that way.

"separate but equal" is racist, so I'm going to have to assume in context he wasn't in support of "separate but equal"?

It was in reference to S_D being a hostile environment but the commenter did not want to go to one of the alternate communities like noscans_daily, and he said "separate but equal is a poor policy for anything."

They immediately pounced on him.

Ehhh, I can sort of understand a knee-jerk bad reaction to what appears to be a comparison between having to choose between comms and actual "separate but equal" policies. No idea if that was what people actually had a problem with, though, so...

Even that's not as bad as the time they banned Gail Simone for responding to criticism of AN ISSUE SHE WROTE by saying "I see what you mean, but maybe see how the whole story turns out before you judge." See, the criticism was based on the magic word: rape. Therefore Gail was ignoring the suffering of an oppressed reader and defending rape as a trope in writing. Oh, and sure enough, the next issue revealed that all was not as it seemed. But she stayed banned.

To my mind, nothing will ever top that for self-destructive stupidity.

(Subtitles for non-comics fans: Gail Simone is perhaps the most talented, brilliant, feminist woman writing superhero comics. She's certainly on anyone's shortlist. Having her in your comics-fangirl community is like having Arthur Conan Doyle in your Sherlock fanclub.)

Woah. There's a few times where they came down over what I considered minor things, but I didn't think it was THAT bad. But then again I missed the debacle you mentioned, which does sound awful.

It's not as bad as tumblr, though. If it was, people would lose their shit over the sex-positive attitude and calling the Xmen privileged because they're cis scum.
