I could do this shit better

(Anonymous) 2013-12-10 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Anyone find that when they see someone else doing their job, they're extra judgmental? Or, conversely, overly lenient?

Ever since being a receptionist, I've found I can be both. Cranky receptionists irritate the hell out of me, because I KNOW if I treated my customers like that, I'd get chewed out of the next pay period. But I also know sometimes someone comes in with a million questions just after your boss has told you he needs a last minute report in five minutes... still, I judge myself if I realize I didn't brace myself and smile anyway.

Yes! I definitely feel that way, especially since I can handle my job and the secretary's job some days and still be polite over it, whereas the actual secretary always seems to have an attitude problem.

I'm pretty much the same way. Servers/cashiers that are rude or inattentive annoy me extra because I'm really big on doing things the right way and being decent to people, and I always take pride in my work even if it's a foodservice job. But I'm more likely than some to be forgiving of honest mistakes, even when they cause me inconvenience.

I'm extra judgmental, but to be fair, I work in animal care. So it's not just a case of 'that could be done more efficiently', it's more like 'if you don't clean those pens thoroughly then the animals will have to sit in dirty pens ffs'.

I've been doing a lot of temp jobs lately, and sometimes I think that. I'm a very motivated person and I generally work hard/fast, but then I see people working the full time jobs who seem to be kind of slacking. It's fine to take a break, and I think I kind of overdo it sometimes, but it's especially frustrating because I'm looking really hard to find a full-time job, and I feel like I could do a better job than a few people who do.

Though most of the people do a decent job, I'm just mostly frustrated with the whole thing.

Not really? I did telemarketing/service rep work for a long time, and now whenever I have to deal with customer service I mostly feel sorry for the person doing it. I was pretty fucking good at the job, but even so it wasn't a fun thing to be doing. I'm as understanding as possible with them now, and I just do my best to make sure we don't waste time on calls.

I'm extra lenient on retail workers after having worked retail myself, because I know how much it sucks.

I had a bunch of fast food jobs for a number of years in high school and college. I always had to move at top speed on the job. Now, I can't help but be judgemental when movie theater employees at the snack counter move at the pace of molasses in January. It's a major reason (after cost) that I don't buy snacks at the movies. I'm itching to go around the counter all "For goodness sake! Let me do that! There. See how little time that took?"

I tend to be both. I did retail for years and so I often find myself being more lenient to workers especially if it's really busy or there's an issue that's the fault of corporate policy and not the poor cashier. On the other hand, if someone's genuinely giving crap service that I know I would never have gotten away with I can definitely be more judgey.

I sure did. When I was promoted from (machine) embroidery to design, I was superirritated with the one who replaced me. Everything from placement to checking for enough underthread.
