Re: Shows that have become bad, but you don't mind their badness

Yeah, I saw the first few seasons when they'd already aired, and that makes me wonder if that helped them be more enjoyable - then again, I know people who watched all or most of the seasons as they aired and only really had a problem with the last few. I know I would have gotten bored with season two pretty quickly if I'd been watching it on air.

There's a definite tonal shift over the series, which I think is supposed to be reflective of the cultural one across the '60s. It gets very cynical. Which I don't mind as much as some, as it seems quite intentional.

For me, I think the series has become more character-based than plot-based. Season 4 was the worst in that regard, but the past 3 seasons have had a higher number of wheel-spinny episodes that don't move the story and characters forward. The treatment of Don's secret past is a good example- S1 Pete attempts to blackmail Don with it, and S3 it instigates Betty's divorce proceedings; both major plot moments as well as character ones. In S4 Don freaks out because the DoD does a background check on him for the aerospace account, but the focus isn't on the professional implications of possibly being revealed and then of losing that account (and making Pete take the fall), but rather on Don's personal ~torment~ over his own cowardice. It wasn't even a major development that season, just one episode. And then S6 is whorehouses all the way down.

But as the thread says, I still like the show and don't mind its badness that much. They're wise to end it next season. Looking forward to seeing how!
