Slytherin's predisposed to villains. It is a villain training center. It does its level best to transform clueless little eleven-year-olds into villains.

God, the system's stupid.

That's because the system is controlled by rich ultra-conservative ex-Nazi sympathizers who justify their prejudice by the legacy of an old bigot who happened to co-found the school several centuries ago. No wonder it's stupid.

TBH I think a lot of that stuff - not the ex-Nazi stuff, but a lot of the classism and conservatism and background, systemic bigotry being seen as basically acceptable to keep around - you don't have to look at Salazar Slytherin or Voldemort; in a lot of ways, it's just the British public school system, and the British upper classes, the way it was 100 years ago and to some extent has been ever since. Especially as seen by someone who is a bit disillusioned and who has leanings towards socialism. Those elements of the system aren't necessarily particular to the fantastic world created by JKR.

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if she was basing her fantasy as satire on reality. She did it quite a bit.
