Yeah, I agree with you, OP. The only moment where she really worked for me as a character was when she told the Doctor about defeating the alien by herself.

The worst part is that Ten even pointed out how OOC she was acting!

Yeah, I was sure there was going to be some twist where neither of them were the real Elizabeth I.

Nothing about that storyline worked for me, though. It felt like an in-joke not meant to be taken seriously, and I think it probably really was an in-joke, perhaps not intended to be taken seriously. In my head canon it never happened.

oh, same!

Heck, for my money Liz X acted more like ... well, what my headcanon for what Elizabeth I might have been like. :p

(P.S. And there's Blanchett and Judy Dench and ...)

OMG, I have that dress. I've had it almost twenty years; a friend made it for SCA, and she couldn't wear it, so she gave it to me.

Now I know I can wear it to cons and point out that it matches a Doctor Who dress. Yay.

I was disappointed too, OP. I felt silly at first, but is it really so much to ask that she at least be better than what we got? I don't know jackshit about history but even I could tell her characterisation was... very odd.

I did love her voice, though. Blackadder ftw.

Secret 2 - Doctor Who, Day of the Doctor 50th anniversary special

[Picture is the actress Joanna Page playing Queen Elizabeth I on the "Day of the Doctor" 50th anniversary special episode of the TV series "Doctor Who". She is a woman with pale skin, long orange hair done in curls and wearing a jewel-decorated golden dress.]

I was really disappointed that she didn't resemble Elizabeth I in either looks, costume OR personality.

Secret because: It's silly to nitpick, anon...

Yes! I've studied Henry VIII and Elizabeth and Mary in my spare time for fun, and I thought I was the only one who hated how she was portrayed!

(Anonymous) 2013-12-11 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
I thought it was a nod to Elizabeth I in Blackadder -- another great British TV Classic.

Maybe it doesn't read right outside of the UK?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-11 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
That might be playing into some people's criticisms of it, but I got the nod and enjoyed it - and I'm still disappointed. While I love Blackadder, I would have preferred it if they hadn't gone down that route.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-11 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
BlackAdder is known outside the UK, though. That's not really the vibe I got off it, but if that was the intention I don't think it was a very good homage.

Yes, it seemed like a shout out to Queenie.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-11 05:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure that's a good thing? I mean, Blackadder isn't supposed to be IC, while Doctor Who generally tries to make a decent attempt at making historical people react as their real life counterparts conceivable would.

I got that same vibe on her personality. I didn't mind her looks, just the way she acted didn't seem very Elizabeth-like. I'm not too chafed about Dr. Who not getting her costume right seeing as how there are historical TV shows out there who do get a bit anachronistic with their costumes anyway.

The Queen Elizabeth stuff was annoying enough when it was just throwaway jokes in the RTD era.

It really didn't need a whole plot devoted to it in the 50th.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-11 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
I'm 100% with you, anon.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-11 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
To me, it felt like a slightly lame throwaway in-joke that they spent waaaaay too much time on. It just wasn't funny or well done enough to warrant how long it ran.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-11 10:26 am (UTC)(link)
Oops, sorry OP and everyone here, I didn't know you all knew Elisabeth personally and knew what she acted like in her private time.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-11 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
You were doing well, but misspelling her name is laying it on a bit thick. 2/10.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-12 06:12 am (UTC)(link)
Even trolls should at least be aware that there are such things as "history books" containing descriptions, writing (often by their contemporaries!) and detailed accounts of famous historical figures, even if they don't bother to read them. Everyone else is, after all.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-11 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
All I ever see is people talking about her being in love with the Doctor and being angry because he left her. Haven't seen the show, but I really hope that's not what they did.
