I find the cities amazing (DR and BC especially), and I love the Sylvari lore with Caithe and the Nightmare Court and all (and canon same-sex couples that they don't make a fuss about) and the cooperative gameplay ... but I find myself mostly playing other things too.

Secret 3 - Guild Wars 2

[Picture is art from the videogame "Guild Wars 2". It depicts three humanoid figures, a wolf-bear like anthropomorphic being and a small blue aquatic being all wearing armor and wielding weapons and magic and generally looking cool.]

I want to like this game, I really do. And yet I can't find myself in a great hurry to play it.

Secret because my friend has been reading me the novels bridging the plot of Guild Wars 1 and Guild Wars 2 and I really adore those but see above.

That's funny because that's nearly exactly how I feel about the books you mentioned. I play the game and am a huge fan of the world of Tyria and Guild Wars in general and I want to read the books but mostly there are other things I always want to read first.

If you already have the game, the great thing is that it'll still be there waiting for you and you're not wasting any money on subs or anything. Interests are funny things and sometimes something you feel you should be interested in just doesn't click (until suddenly it does).

I didn't even know there were books! I kinda want to check them out now...

I was apprehensive about GW2 at first, but my best friend kept insisting that I get it. I finally did get it and I love it to bits. And you can just play on it whenever you feel like it with no rush, which is a plus.

I do enjoy playing GW2 but I also tend to play some of my other online games over it a lot of the time, I think it's because it's a one off payment so I don't feel as though I'm as obligated to play it to make it worth the money, so to speak. Either way the setting is good and the in-game graphics are gorgeous.

I found this game to be ASTOUNDINGLY bland. pretty, but really bland, particularly compared to Warcraft and TOR.

It's definitely got its issues but blander than WoW? Really? Ugh, WoW was so booooring and pointless to me. So boring and bland. Though to be fair I had nobody to play WoW with whereas I have family and friends and a really great guild to play GW with, and I know that can make a huge difference.

(But for reals I'm not attacking. I have a friend that is hardcore WoW player and she feels the same way you do about GW.)

Sometimes, I'd rather pay to play WoW than play GW2 for free (though, at this point I'm not playing either). But in my case, I solo'd my way through WoW for the most part while I have a group to play GW2 with (though even they don't seem to be playing much, either).

Eh, I have it and it's been months since I touched it. Once I hit max level there didn't seem to be much to do besides grind for cosmetic gear and run around doing map achievements.

:O Yay GW2!

I'm amused at what you said about the books because a lot of people think they're pretty bad. (I like them, but I tend to like just about anything I read.) A friend of mine put it into perspective, saying that video game tie-in novels are pretty much always bad, and these are among the better ones.

(why does everyone have to die in them though)

Anyway, yeah I love GW2. There are admittedly a lot of problems with the story, both personal and living, but I think the world and characters are engaging. And there is some insanely good fanfic about them *cough*https://www.fanfiction.net/u/1510121/Xendell*cough*, although it is much rarer than I'd like.

Speaking up as a fan who's played since week two or so of launch and hadn't touched the first game. Also as a huge fan of the novels (which are campy as hell sometimes and very human-centric ((asura player here)) but still fun!)

The game does have its flaws and I do find myself taking breaks during Living Story content that I'm not as engaged in (see the recent Fractals event). However I do swing between playing it like crazy because the gameplay is varied and fun and taking breaks. Plus it has World versus World, which to me is PvP Lite. Also see: normal PvP scares me horribly and I like to run around in the zerg.

I'd say to wait until their next sale and pick up a digital download of the game then, so you're only spending $40-50 one time.

I love this game. I tend to have the similar issue, until I actually start playing it. My GF bounces around games a lot, so I tend to follow her around. Right now we're on WoW but before it was GW2, and it's incredibly immersive once you actually get into it.

If you don't have a friend who plays, I would like to suggest the Tarnished Coast server, which is the unofficial RP server. Folks are tremendously nice, and it's pretty obvious when other people come guesting. I've played MMOs for about ten years and I have NOT once seen a server so polite, helpful, and friendly to total strangers. It's often full so sometimes you have to wait to get in on the server, but once you have a character on, you're fine. (If you have friends elsewhere, totally ignore this!)
