Cupcakes was rather tame, and pretty lame. People act like people haven't been writing dark versions of things since forever.

I tried to read Cupcakes. I had no problem with the content (I was reading it because I enjoy that kind of stuff), but it was just really bad writing. I guess I shouldn't be surprised when a fic is only famous for its shock value and yet I still felt disappointed.

I feel kind of like a loser for actually being so frightened by it (& having Party of One be the newest episode the next day didn't help). If it wasn't for FS' horizontal character development, Pinkie would probably still be my least favorite.

Is it hypocritical of me to have really hated Cupcakes but thoroughly enjoyed "The Chronicles 8", "Piracy" and "Självdestruktivitetens Emissarie" ???

Sidenote: I still haven't read Rainbow Factory, but I've been intending to. (I still don't think it'll ever be as good as Piracy, though.)

What are the others about? Are they decently written? I used to go to Godawful Fanfiction back in the day so I'm pretty used to very screwed-up fanfiction, and I just found Cupcakes pretty dull and the writing extremely subpar.

I'm not that familiar with the fandom anymore, but Cupcakes wasn't all that interesting. It didn't really present a creative idea or interesting deconstruction of the world. And the fandom seems pretty full of stuff like that, so it's not that surprising.

It's not even that shocking. I'm pretty sure there are new, more violent works by now.
