I think you're good, OP? I mean, her weight is a major part of why a lot of people love Ellie, but that's not all of what makes Ellie cool. I love just how confident and unapologetic she is.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-11 04:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Seriously, her confidence was so refreshing. Ellie is fantastic.

I might get dogpiled for this, but you could always try to see if you can find a beta reader who can help with that aspect -- because you're right, there are physical aspects of being a large woman that might not occur to you.

(I'm an ex-smoker, and I've done "cigarette betas" for people.)

(Anonymous) 2013-12-11 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I think this is a great idea.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-11 05:28 am (UTC)(link)
yes, do this.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-11 06:55 am (UTC)(link)
Best idea, yes, OP, please please please get a beta

OP

(Anonymous) 2013-12-11 05:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, that sounds like a great idea! Thank you.

How exactly would that work? "Hey,y'all! Are any of you fat? And if you are a fat girl want to help me right a fat girl?"

What I think is that people should only be allowed to write about people and situations exactly like their own. It's wrong to use your imagination or sympathize with or try to understand another person. Everyone who tries is evil!!

she's so beautiful

ugh, she's so awesome. I love her so much.

That's a wonderful character design!

If you want to write it, write it. You don't have to experience something to write it. And your thoughts on a character don't have to come from a self-identifying or self-experience place. You have opinions and a love for a character, go ahead and share it!

(I have no clue about the fandom. Maybe it's really a place that would eat you alive for sharing your love and opinions.)

Yepyep, I'm a published author who writes gay vampire smut. I'm none of those things, but I write it anyway!

I think you should write about her anyway, OP! You shouldn't have to limit yourself to writing only about things within your personal experiences. And I think that as long as you make it clear that you're not saying that you understand her situation completely/have totally been in her shoes, etc... then you should be fine. And you can always get advice from people who have had those experiences to get another perspective.

Oh hey, this lovely lady again.

Dude, OP, this is the exact difference between empathy and sympathy. You empathize with something you've experienced personally and share with another. You sympathize with something you haven't experienced personally but wish to share with another. Sympathy isn't a bad thing.

For example, I sympathize with men. Am I a man? No, but because I can sympathize with them means I can write about them and with them. Seriously, if we were only allowed to write or have opinions on things we had personally experienced we wouldn't have dragons and really, the world would be a lesser place.

You're coming from the right place. You like the character. Express your liking of the character.

Secret 10 - Borderlands 2

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-12-11 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
[Picture is Ellie from the videogame "Borderlands 2". She is an overweight woman with light skin, short red hair and wearing a green sleeveless blouse, blue denim overalls, red sneaker shoes, a belt with tools and wielding two wrenches, each in one hand. The one in her left hand is huge and she is letting it rest against her shoulder and behind her head.]

I think she's a great character. I'd love to write down my opinions about her. But I've never weighed more than 110 lbs. I fear that I can never fully understand her struggles. And I'm positive that fandom would eat me alive.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-11 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
you can always interview or talk to people who weigh above the acceptable norm. it is perfectly acceptable to write about things you didn't experience, you just have to do your research and accept criticisms of your portrayal a bit more carefully.
you can also add in (if any) personal body issue struggles that you have, just because it is not directly the same it doesn't mean you can't relate 100%

(Anonymous) 2013-12-11 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
her head is disproportionately tiny

(Anonymous) 2013-12-11 07:20 am (UTC)(link)
Her struggles aren't related to her weight, though? She doesn't care, she loves her body! Her struggles are more related to living on a planet of psychos, and that's something we all understand to an equal degree.

where is this borderlands fandom that people keep mentioning?

do it, write it, i'd love to have more of a fandom, i love this game!

(Anonymous) 2013-12-11 02:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not familiar with Borderlands, but... why should it matter at all, unless you're writing something specifically about her weight? If we can only write about people in our life circumstances, I guess I'll have to leave off writing about princesses, ghosts, vampires, serial killers, short people, men, straight people, Asian people, people who live in the USA, people who live in Britain, people who lived before 1985... I'd be left with a pretty small number of people to write about.

Also, how would fandom know how much you weigh/have ever weighed?
