This! I love all the backstory work that's been done with the movie, more than the movie itself.

I just love everything about this movie. <3

useless comment is useless. *drives away*

Is that really the backstory? I thought it was just that artist's headcanons.

I'm pretty sure they're just the artist's headcanons.

Some of the work was up on Dreamworks' tumblr or somesuch, so at least some of them are canon-canon, I think. Couldn't tell you which ones though.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-13 04:56 am (UTC)(link)
Rufftoon actually worked on the movie and got the okay to write this backstory frm Dreamworks.

I wish we could get a sequel that just delves more into the movie!mythology. Seriously, I'd love to see rufftoons art animated, and made movie canon, it would be amazing.

Well, I like the movies ones all except for Pitch. I found his book backstory about how he had a daughter that he loved so much, but forgot about her after the nightmares/evil tricked him and took him over was so sad. It was a lot more interesting than "wahhh, no one likes me, I live under a crappy twin bed-frame and I'm afraid of horses"

(Anonymous) 2013-12-11 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
Well, theoretically, movie!Pitch could still have book!Pitch's background.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-11 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
And the same thing could be said that ancient spirit of fear whose morality is based off of an entirely different system than humans but who's been around humans so long that he's started to pick up their desires and terrors and even their shape is sooo much more interesting than a rehash of A Little Princess. To each their own.

Disclaimer: I've loved book!Pitch's backstory up until the third book (haven't read the fourth), but I also love a good invented mythology.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-11 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
Have you read the Guardians of Screwing Up series? They've taken one or two things from the books (most notably Pitch's origin, although his backstory's altered considerably), but for the most part they've been playing around with myths and legends from the world over and the fics read more like something rufftoon would've written than William Joyce.

They are on AO3: http://archiveofourown.org/series/30440

Hey, rufftoon, haven't seen that name in a while.

Secret 12 - Rise of the Guardians, art by Rufftoon

[Picture is a drawing (credited to "Rufftoon") of Jack Frost from the CGI animated movie "Rise of the Guardians" wearing a small brown cape and brown pants/trousers while holding a shepherd's staff thing. He has pale skin and short white hair. He is standing on a rock, overlooking a field. There is a wagon being pulled by an animal a little ways in the distance.]

I like the movie backstories and mythology so much better than the book backstories. Almost every fic uses the books instead. I wish there was more stuff with this.

Are they two different things?

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2013-12-11 05:19 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, I thought the books were the backstories for the movies. But I've been out of this fandom for a while and even back then I wasn't very deeply into it.

Someone please explain, or at least link to where I can find out more?

Re: Are they two different things?

According to William Joyce, the guy who writes the books and came up with the concept for the movie, they're supposed to take place in the same canon, with the books being the backstory for the movie. However, there are so many discrepancies, timeline inconsistencies, differing character interpretations and even wildly differing casts of characters (there are at least three in the books who aren't so much as nodded to in the film), and general failures to connect, that most people consider the books as a seperate canon because there's no way the two could be easily and peacefully joined together.

Also, one of the main storyboard artists for the movie (the aforementioned rufftoon) started making little backstory comics based on the information she had about the characters while the movie was still in the early development stages, and they really don't connect with Joyce's version of events.

From what little I know, the film is BASED off the books but has made enough changes to be its own continuity. Jack Frost is a new character for the films to act as an audience surrogate, and some characters were changed; Bunny for example was a machine tinkerer with a waistcoat in the books.

I don't know much else apart from that, but hopefully that answers your question.

OP

(Anonymous) 2013-12-11 02:34 pm (UTC)(link)
The movie has a more mythology-based backstory with spirits like Pitch being ancient beings formed on Earth and given shape by human stories. (The crew that worked on it made some comics about it) http://rufftoon.deviantart.com/art/Intermezzo-H-P-01-362790172

In the books, Bunnymund is a time traveling six-armed alien with a serious egg fetish, and everything good about Earth came from aliens.

I tend to prefer the idea that Earth is able to create its own mythology, and invent its own things, and doesn't need aliens to come along and help the mudbugs become civilized. Also, the books had a weird repetition of "The greatest and only true love in the universe is that of a father for his daughter" which was understandable considering the author, but a little off putting.

OP again, I realized I came across as a little harsh. I'd just love to see fanon exploring and inventing mythology, instead of http://knowyourmeme.com/photos/158329-ancient-aliens

It's especially jarring when people do go into developing a mythology and have other characters from myth and magic going on, and "Oh yeah, but Pitch/Bunny/Manny/Sandy are still Super Advanced Aliens, not mythical creatures."

Are they significantly different? I mean, the only back story we really get in the movie is Jack's, who's not in the books (yet). And Tooth looking awfully White for someone who's from Asia in the books, but...

I really adore Jack's back story, it's both sweet and kinda creepy and sad and... yeah. (-:

Personally, I like both canons and I do my best to mix them both when I write. I can definitely understand preferring one over the other, especially since Rufftoon draws such wonderful comics to go with her own headcanons.

I'm going to have to echo the sentiment that the one that I much prefer book canon for is Pitch. He gets far more background than simply "I'm ignored and forgotten" as his motivation.
