Did anyone else used to be addicted to overly angsty fic when they were younger? Back in the day, the Harry Potter fandom was the ruler of this (I think some might argue that LOTR claimed this dubious title, but I think HP fandom dominated just because of the sheer volume of pure angst they put out).

I remember one Draco/Harry fic that had Harry working at Hot Topic (ignoring the fact that the UK doesn't have them) and naturally he was being horrifically abused 24/7 by the Dursleys. When he got back to Hogwarts his friends cast a spell on him that would reveal what his "soul's song" was and it was some evanescence song that made every character in the room cry about how sad it was. Obviously evil!Dumbledore was thrown in. It was so bad an yet I wish I could find it again for nostalgia's sake

I read something just like that! Everyone was shocked and worried when Harry's song was Evanescence's Breathe No More because it was so hopeless. I don't remember the Hot Topic part though, so I don't know if I just forgot or if there are two remarkably similar fics.

haha, the song was definitely breathe no more so I believe we're thinking of the same fic unless there were two that used the exact same shitty plot device. Now that I think about it, the Hot Topic part may not have been in that fic although I know it was used in numerous others. I'm still pretty sure it contained evildumbles but I may be merging all of the terrible HP fic I've read into one giant angst blob

This isn't even on topic, but how ridiculous was Hot Topic as a cultural touchstone? I mean, it really kind of was for a certain kind of person (self included), and it really was kind of a strange thing to play that role. Is it still like that? I know they're still around but I don't have any real interaction with them anymore.

I love Hot Topic, personally. I do think the whole ~angst~ thing in relation to Hot Topic is really superficial; it's certainly not why I shop there.

Last I checked, Hot Topic was all about marketing stuff from the 70s and 80s (Rainbow Brite! Pink Floyd! Early video games! The Grateful Dead!) To teenagers who remember none of this, while making people do remember it feel old and awkward should they accidentally stray into the store, lured in by the nostalgia.

Haha. I was writing that I didn't remember going through and angst fic phase when I remembered the first fic I wrote (on the internet) featured severe homophobia, character death and attempted suicide. NEVER MIND.

I don't know how much I like reading it, but I sure do struggle not to write it, even now. I've certainly read my fair share of sad shit, though.

My new mantra for fic writing (that I came up with today) is MORE SMILES LESS TEARS! Because, jfc, I can't not write angst.

I wrote hilariously angsty poetry back in the day if that counts?

Didn't everyone? It's such a teenager thing to do.

Lmao, the author also apparently wrote an equally angsty story where Harry has multiple personalities and one where the characters from Gundam Wing rescue him from his abusive family. God damn, I would have loved this shit when I was 13. ~If I could turn back tiiiime~

There was this Transformers fic I remember liking when I was about 15, IDK if it still exists on the internet or if the author's taken it down. It was every Starscream/Skyfire cliché crammed into one fic.

Super-OOC-Starscream is angsty because Even-More-OOC-Megatron rapes him every night and the other Decepticons don't take him seriously. Then one day he gets beat up really badly and Ultra-OOC Skyfire comes to save the day with MAGICAL HEALING COCK. Then Super-OOC-Starscream is like "Fuck this shit I'mma join the Autobots" and Tremendously-OOC-Optimus is totally okay with this for some reason, but the rest of the Autobots don't trust Super-OOC-Starscream (understandably), so there's some more angst about that, but luckily Ultra-OOC-Skyfire still has MAGICAL HEALING COCK to make things better.

Yes. My first big fandom was seaQuest and that was all about the hilarious Lucas angst. I'd say 95% of the fic for the fandom at the time was pure hilarious, wonderful, Lucas angst.

To be honest I still get in the MUST HAVE ALL THE ANGST moods. It's not quite the same as angsty teen me was looking for, but still.

I loved HP fanfic but the angstfics just never worked for me. I think it bothered me the most when they actually would've been really good had the author not deemed it necessary for there to be angst in every single scene.

I read a Harry Potter fic once where Harry was beaten and bruised over the summer (as Harry is, you know) and spent the whole fall term using glamours to hide it, which somehow slowed his healing so he was still all broken when Christmas hit. And for some reason, he didn't go home with the Weasleys and Dumbledore wasn't there, so Christmas pretty much ended up being Snape and handful of students.

And I guess it started out okay, even when Harry got sick and Snape realized what was going on, but then Harry is angsting so goddamn much that the ghost of James has to come and tell him that it's okay to let Snape be his new dad. And then somehow Snape, Harry and Lupin all get bound together, and I *think* it was going to become a "Snupin and their son Harry" story, but I stopped there.

I remember reading a lot of HP fics back in the day that had angsty song lyrics in between scenes or paragraphs. Lots of Evanescence and Greenday, if I recall.

It is like a sickness. I really only do this for HP, but I will read the most godawful melodramatic piece of angsty shit and love it. LOL I don't think it's good writing or anything, but I enjoy the hell out of it.

for me, yes. but not "obsessed with" so much as "wrote a lot of." it was secretly about me and my very serious feelings, but in like a poetic way because poetry is meaningful and deep and facts are for soulless gradgrinds. none of it exists anymore. I don't know whether this is fortunate or un.
