Re: Tell me what it means?

I thiiiink:

1. Due to their insistence on isolating themselves for various reasons, the family on the farm have become bound to it beyond normal measures, possibly haunting it. (The farm setting reminds me some of an old underworld conception I read about a while back, where it's possible for the living to unwittingly cross over into it and interact with the dead in a place where the dead do what they did in life, but the living can tell something's off whereas the dead can't.)

It's hinted that time not only speeds up on the farm, but also loops for the family members themselves, with Jeremiah often holding his stomach where he later gets wounded and Catie's non-surprise or fear of the wolf. Catie and possibly the dad have figured this out; Jeremiah has not. Each loop would then end around the time the dad leaves and Catie finds Jeremiah's body. Michael's presence is new this time around and disrupting whatever peace of mind with this the family has resigned itself to.

The family initally isolated themselves because: dad is an alcoholic, and is ashamed of Jeremiah being gay, and has lost Catie's mom (more speculation on that below); Jeremiah is gay and bullied or shunned for it; Catie is deeply protective of and wants to "cure" Jeremiah, and is in love with him; and while she's tangentially aware of how unacceptable her attempts at treating him like a boyfriend are, she deems it better than him being gay.

I'm gonna run with this interpretation for the rest of this.

2. The quote at the end is from the Bible, Jeremiah 45:5, and is part of a message from God. The version being used and in this context can be read as saying "Don't try to seek anything, since I will bring all sorts of wrath down and let you be preyed upon." (though in context and in other translations, it seems more like God telling a long-suffering if devoted scribe through Biblical-prophet-Jeremiah, "Keep your head down, since I'm going to upheave the world a lot more but I'll keep you safe." I am not a Biblical scholar by any means, tho...) Anyway, it could mean the family's doomed to repeat this time in their lives no matter what, but that Jeremiah will always want something more regardless of the consequences (and thus kind of the teller of a really depressing cautionary tale).

So I guess a question that comes up is, is Jeremiah better off ignorant of the possibilities represented by Michael or not? There's also this idea that shuttering yourself off to the world is just a wee bit unhealthy.

So, um, re: the cover of the story: Jeremiah is reluctant to speak up for himself and admit that he'll always take off in pursuit of a better life, even though it will always end up killing him; Catie doesn't want to admit to the things passing all of them by in the world and how fragile and unhealthy her happiness is; and Michael, while being a catalyst, ultimately just drives away from all of it.

3. The wolf's just this wolf, you know? But also representative of the dangers outside, maybe?

4. Jeremiah and Catie seem to be at least half-siblings, if not full, and the dad is their dad. I kind of wondered if Catie's mom and their dad were also related. Everyone's snippy with Michael about how they're related, Catie's mom and Catie lived in a separate house, and Catie doesn't want to say what happened to her mom. I think the dad also insisted that Jeremiah and Catie weren't brother and sister because even if he were bothered by their relationship, he could reason that it was at least straight.
