Sure. Fantasy, in general, I agree with you. That's not the fantasy that Tolkien wrote, though. Fantasy absolutely can be multiracial, and should be, but that's not the fantasy that Tolkien wrote and that's not what he was doing. And it's not a problem with his work that it's not that. That's a criticism that makes sense in the context of fantasy in general, and it's a critique in the context of fantasy that is not as specifically tied to a single cultural milieu and a single folklore as Tolkien's is. But it has no basis in the text.

I mean, thinking about it more, I guess if you don't care about faithfulness in an adaptation (which is basically fine) it's not an issue. But I'm not going to be a fan of it anyway, which is a big deal to me.

well, it's pretty clear that the makers of the hobbit didn't care about faithfulness of the adaptation when it came to a bunch of other stuff, so why should the whiteness be sacrosanct?
