Your fandom-related comfort!fantasies (inspired by #4)

(Anonymous) 2013-12-12 05:05 am (UTC)(link)
So...do you guys have any fantasies about fictional worlds/characters that you like because they're really comforting to think about? Like, a little cozy place you can go in your books/tv shows/movies/whatever?

Mine are ridiculous, but...the Daily Planet offices. Imagining I'm some low-level worker there. Knowing that Superman is right there and will be right there to rescue me if shit goes down...it's so nice.

Also, at the clinic with Dr. House. He'd probably emotionally traumatize me, but I would definitely live/get better.

...I like to think I'd make a great Blue Dragon rider. I like the idea that getting chosen by a dragon = steady career and safe home for the rest of your life!

My comfort fantasies usually involve me being physically and mentally stronger than I am irl. I don't like to think of other people saving me, I want to save myself. Alternately - and this is so cheesy, oh my God - I give the problem to a fictional character and let the other half of the ship comfort them. Sometimes it's so ridiculous for them to have the problem but I can't help it, it always makes me feel better.

Oh man, giving the problem to a fictional character is so great. But I'm even cheesier because I use my OCs. Though I don't always give them my problem, sometimes I give them a more fitting problem that brings out the same emotions. Cheesy but effective.

This pretty well describes my feelings about most of the characters in fandom that I really love and read the most fic about (especially when I'm feeling down). Share my problems, but with far more real justification for them. It is cheesy, but sometimes that's what you want or need.

I do exactly that. Luckily one of my fandoms has a character who is canonically horribly depressed over not preventing the death of someone dear to him. Then again I feel guilty for identifying with him because oh my god, anon, you're not depressed and you never have been, you couldn't possibly understand what it's like, so fuck that.

Same here! My main comfort fantasy is getting some kind of magical girl transformation object, or that I've fulfilled a Homestuck planet quest and hit godtier, and being able to save/help myself and other people instead of depending on so many people all the time @_@

The silly Homestuck fantasy actually helps me out with my dumb anxiety stuff a lot, because I go "well I need to do (x) to fulfill my quest!" Whether (x) is speaking up about my feelings and needs more often, or being able to ask a stranger for directions, or dragging myself out of the house more often. Which makes me about the biggest dweeb ever, hahahaha XD

+1 to House. When I'm having a bad day pain-wise I imagine he's my doctor and finds a cure for fibromyalgia, or figures out that I've got something else instead that's totally fixable and so obscure that only he would know about it.

Oh, I'm really sorry to hear that. :( *hugs* That sounds like the best kind of wish-fulfillment fantasy.

Marco lived and he's being adorable and badass with Jean. That is what happened and I don't care what you say. ;_;

Even though I'd be a redshirt who would die horribly in some disaster, I would sometimes give anything to be sitting in Ten-Forward on the Enterprise-D with Guinan to listen to me.

Next Gen did have a much lower red shirt body count than Classic Trek did.

The TNG Pocket Books were littered with the corpses of redshirts from wall to wall, LOL. "MY DEADLINE IS IN TWO WEEKS AND I NEED TO GET THIS PLOT STARTED. Oh, handy, I'll just kill all the minor characters the command crew had charming encounters with in the first ten chapters."

My comfort fantasies literally all include the character I ship my favourite character with snuggling up in bed with me and just holding me until I fall asleep.

(Also sometimes we fuck. It's my comfort fantasy, I can have Healing Cock (or Clit) if I want.)

I cannot have fandom-related comfort!fantasies. I always end up imagining how the characters die :/ (which they should, considering how much time has passed since the canon source was written). Although I do sometimes imagine them cuddling and falling asleep (this applies to just about every protagonist from any fandom of mine).

I live in a city where schools are already a little prone to school shootings, and then my school was shot up by a crazy person just last summer.

I like to imagine that when there is a school shooting, the Avengers either swoop in to save the day or commiserate with the students.

That said, I almost feel like putting this over in the confessions thread above, considering what happened when I tried asking for a fic of this. I still consider this one of the worst hypocrisies of fandom. -_-

I think what some people don't realize is the difference between wanting fic that deals with a sensitive situation for the sake of comfort and coping with traumatic or disturbing things that happened to you, and wanting fic that deals with a sensitive situation for the sake of cheap drama. Both the motivation and (usually) how the content is handled are very different, and should be acknowledged as such.

See, I would, but when you're in an environment that regularly uses devastating wars/genocides/historical events, sexual assault, abuse, torture, and other things like them as sources of cheap drama, I can't help but resent fandom for drawing the line at school shootings and saying THAT can't be written about. -_-

never feel guilty for your stress-relief fantasies man. they're meant to relieve you of stress, not cause more.

I do the same with my OTP :'3 You're not alone there.

I like making them go through infinite AUs, too. Sometimes they're cute AUs, sometimes they're canon-flavor AUs, and sometimes they are... quite fucked up AUs. But there's always the "inconditional love" as a recurring theme. IDK why, I don't believe in One True Love or Soulmates, but the idea of my OTP finding each other again across the multiverse is so comforting.

There are so many characters I just want to hug me. There are a lot of things my RL friends and family do well, but I haven't had a good bearhug in ages and I seem to be drawn to "big guy" characters who look like they'd be really good at it. And also Sam from Zombies, Run!, who is short and a little scrawny in my head but who would make up for it in enthusiasm.
