I'm more surprised about Miyazaki than Tezuka, because Miyazaki works have been out in theaters here. But with either of them, never having heard of them seems to be more of an issue of knowing the person and not recalling the name. Or having stumbled on their work without knowing who it was. I mean, it's pretty hard to avoid knowledge of them entirely, even among people with no particular interest in anime (I think at least 70% of the general public has at least heard of Spirited Away or Astro Boy).
