Things You Never Expected to Write in College Papers

[personal profile] fleshisyummy 2013-12-14 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
I never expected that I would have to use the word "fuck" so much. I'm pretty sure this is the fifth time I've had to write an essay quoting a character using it, and I'm only a sophomore.

What about you guys?

I had to write a technical paper about road design in my senior year, and the teacher wanted us to define everything. I was defining things like "curve" and "friction" and providing pictures. Mostly I just wondered how dumb the teacher thought the average layperson was, considering I was writing this for people who would've presumably already picked up my paper on the technical aspects of road design.

Yeah, that's odd. I hate when professors do that because the target audience is clearly going to have some prior knowledge of the subject.

I can't begin to tell you what the aspects of road design might be, but I'm pretty cool with the words "curve" and "friction." So... yeah, I don't know what your teacher was saying. Maybe (s)he took the whole "peanut butter and jelly" analogy literally?

I wrote about fandom three times. The first time, the professor was a 60-something year old, and I half expected him to be scandalized; instead he was fascinated. (I want to add, though, that I really only went into the... tamer aspects of fandom. But still.)

Oh god, I think I would be way too embarrassed to ever write about fandom, but it's great you did!

One intro paragraph I wrote for something, I don't even remember what, was this weirdo atmospheric scene set featuring a professor with the Kama Sutra squirreled away in between more traditionally academic texts on his bookshelf. I wasn't writing fiction so I have no idea why I wrote that intro.

I used to have to write so much weird and personal journal entry type stuff for my psych classes. I don't even remember the half of it.

Once I wrote what was basically a rp fanfic about three famous dudes from psychology having a dinner party. I didn't say their names in the paper, just let their actions identify them. The assignment was to write about three famous people from psychology and that's how I did it. Kinda makes me want to pull out my old computer just to read the bs I used to write for school.

Writing fanfic for school is always interesting. I feel like everyone has a fanfic type activity at one point or another. I remember for high school French, I ended up writing what was essentially a Winnie the Pooh fanfic.

That's cool you took that option since you had the choice.

Writing fanfic for school is always fun. I remember writing a canon-divergence AU for Romeo and Juliet where the Nurse convinces Juliet that, if she's going to be kicked out of her father's house for refusing to commit bigamy, she should just run away from home and go to Mantua and find Romeo.

Then for a creative writing class, during the unit on TV script writing I started writing an episode of The X-Files with a demonic furniture store that sold couches that ate people. I kinda wish I'd finished it.

I kinda wish I'd finished it.

And now I do too.

I don't think I ever wrote anything terribly unexpected in college, but in high school chemsitry I got extra credit for writing a story in which Scully explained balanced chemical equations to Mulder.

In my junior year, I wrote a paper on penis bones for my vertebrate anatomy class. Apparently, penis bones are very useful for identifying/classifying various mammals.

I'm a freshman and an english major. my intro to lit teacher was shocked when the entire freshman population of the class was like "we can use 'I' in essays???" I still feel awkward using it since in high school it's such a big taboo.

I'm an English major in college too, and I rarely use "I" in essays. My professors never said anything about it, but it just looks less serious to me.

depends on the type of essay

it's okay if it's a personal essay about your own observations

I once spent a page and a half giving a rudimentary explanation of the "free will" mode in the Sims 2 and my very basic understanding of how it works. Granted, the paper was for a class entitled "Philosophy of Mind", so you can kind of understand how that got involved.

It's a discussion board rather than a paper, but I didn't expect to be discussing what amounts to slash subtext in classic literature.

It's awesome though I wish I could do this for a living.

I did a paper on small-group dynamics and leadership in Galaxy Quest. Never would have predicted that....
