If your dream is to give your barn cats a nice indoor place, the solution is to make them indoor cats. It's not hard.

Barn cats tend to be at least semi-feral. Once a feral cat passes a certain age, turning it into an indoor cat can be really hard, and stressful for the animal. Doing that with an entire colony would be virtually impossible.

I've known semi-ferals who liked to be petted a little, and would sit and wait for me by their feeding spots, but they still liked their independence, and shutting them up in a house wouldn't have been fair. The heated shelter that tasogare_n_hime described would be perfect.

From experience, yeah it is that hard. If I could bring them inside, I wouldn't bother wanting to build a special place for them because I'd already have it. We've got cats that are the sweetest creatures you could imagine out doors, but put them in a house and they turn into nearly unstoppable forces of destruction and pain. Having a shelter for them where they can enter, and leave completely on their own terms without ever feeling trapped would be much less stressful to them.

I'd love to just have a cat door put in my house. I have two indoor cats that can not survive outside though, especially my visually, and possibly hearing impaired tom cat Cadbury. It would also pretty much guaranty I'd wake up to find raccoons, or some other wild animal in bed with me.
