I really must disagree that the Lunaverse uses character assassination. The characters are different, by virtue of it being an alternate universe where some characters turned out differently, from Celestia and Luna down to Twilight Sparkle and her friends. The point of an AU (at least some of them) is to explore different ways of developing a character.

If anything, adding obvious flaws to a character in an AU setting, or stripping virtues from them, is a way of praising the character, because it highlights those virtues or lack of flaws in their canon personalities. For example, Lunaverse!Fluttershy is a doormat with no ability to stand up for herself or anypony else... which highlights just how important canon!Fluttershy's ability to put her hoof down really is.
