Granada Lestrade is adorable and it's a great performance, he can portray the character's feelings of frustration/admiration and suspicion/respect without saying a word. Colin Jeavons is also amazing in the BBC House of Cards.
DI Greg Lestrade is my Lawful Good Silver Fox and all the capslock in the world can't describe how I feel about S/L in Sherlock, but he isn't really a Lestrade. Lestrade is supposed to be energetic and proud and always kind of wrong. He's not supposed to be his "handler".

BBC!Lestrade is awesome but yeah, he's some OC who happens to be named Lestrade but otherwise has no antecedent in either canon or previous adaptations who got plopped into the show. Not that that makes him a worse character, it just means it's very hard to compare to any previous Lestrade because he bears little resemblance to any of them.

I think Lestrade is described as a bulldog in Hound of the Baskervilles, but that might have been ACD continuing the canine theme.
