Can someone explain early Harry Potter fandom to me?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-15 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been reading the Msscribe Story and while it's awesome, I don't quite understand how early Harry Potter fandom (like, turn of the millennium) worked. Can someone who was there sort of elaborate and give some examples of what a typical online HP fan would be aware of around that time?

depends on the fan. I was into HP fandom at the time all that was going on, and I even read the fics of some of the BNFs involved in the drama, and I was never aware of any of that wank mentioned in the msscribe story. didn't find out about it until years after the fact when I saw it linked from fandom wank. I read plenty of fic, I just didn't interact with those circles of people and didn't pay attention to fandom wank outside my own circle of friends.

I was there in 2002 and I wasn't involved at all. I just read fic and stayed of the periphery of fandom. I was barely aware of the infamous ship wars.

It was hilarious. There were factions and all these little in-fights and people being kicked out because of ship wars. I was only aware of most of it because my friend was a not-quite-BNF during those days. We would often laugh at the latest uproar within the fandom.

I've never read Msscribe, so I can't relate it to the fandom history. I wasn't involved in fandom, as such, but I did read a lot of fic.

Between books 4 and 5 (Goblet and Phoenix), there was a, like, five-year hiatus. At the end of Goblet, Voldemort regained his body, and we were pretty much left on a cliffhanger. The war had not yet started, but we knew it was coming. Cedric was the only one who had dies yet, and it was sudden and shocking.

It was basically the perfect storm for fanfic. This is where fanon developed, for the most part. "Draco in Leather Pants" started then, because the characters were just turning into older teens, and Draco's worst act had been some rivalry-based bullying and showing off his father's racism (14-year-olds aren't really that developed, imo). So a bunch of girls around the same age took the almost blank slate and put "hot, rich, rival boy" to his character.

It's also worth noting that, as far as I remember, there weren't the high numbers of adult fans at the time. Adult fans today are mostly people who grew up with it, I think. And back then, we were still teenagers ourselves. Teens, as a group, tend to write about the same things: relationships, over-wrought emotions, the author's friends in cool, magical worlds, making the characters deal with teenager problems, etc. I'd say that most Mary Sues are written by teens.

But the most wanktastic fans in HP at the time were already adults--Msscribe and her many sockpuppets, Cassie Clare, Aja, Heidi, the adult HP fan forum...

The wankfest were huge and melodramatic, but it's surprisingly easy to avoid if you just stay in your corner and read/write/review fics quietly like myself. I was in the fandom when all the hooha over Msscribe happened, but it took a friend who frequent FW for me to learn about it.

I also only ever read one fic by the so-called BNF CC, never saw what's the big deal is about her Draco Trilogy and I couldn't finished it.

Now Aja is a bit more ubiquitous. It doesn't help that I share a handful of fandoms with her, not just HP

I think I did see one of MsScribe's trouble-causing, where she sockpuppeted as a racist idiot and the post got a storm of trolling.

I also heard gossip down the grapevine, and I may have read some of the fics of some of the other big BNFs (I'm pretty sure I read on of Aja's)... but mostly I missed it all because I was down in the slash end of the fandom, and Cassie Claire was not doing slash.
