This was me, too. I went in prepared to hate his little snowman guts, and came out thinking he was one of my favorite characters in the entire film.

I think it really does help that he has a "backstory" of sorts, and that he's not around for the really "dark" scenes; the movie did a good job of making sure he didn't "break" the scenes that were supposed to be more serious. If he had, I don't think I would have liked him as much as I do.
