Rules of Feminism

(Anonymous) 2013-12-16 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
Important Note: This could get wanky if we don't treat each others opinions as valid, so lets keep it civil eh?

So There seems to be as many different brands of feminism as there are breeds of vampire, and I'm curious about your individual philosophies, rules and guidelines as they relate to the movement.

Let's start right off the bat with the one main rule that unites all groups, cant be argued, and should really go without saying

1. Women are in no way less than men.

Ok, Take it from there f!s...

Clearly not, tho. That's the only rule everyone can definitely agree on, but it's not the only rule that a person can hold.

But anon, even that isn't agreed upon.

There is a branch of feminism that thinks women are worth less than men?

(NA)

They might be saying that some branches of feminism believe women are less than men in some ways and greater in others? Different strengths? idk

Well, I think there's some "feminists" that definitely think women are better than men. Morally superior, men are evil, etc. I honestly thought they were magical unicorns that sexist men invented to talk about how they hate feminism. But then I made the mistake of visiting ontd_feminism.

I don't consider them real feminists, though.

DA
The only feminists I'd ever encountered until about two years ago all think women are auperior to men on every way and the "equality" they want is actually female domination. It's always made me very uncomfortable about feminism and I'm still wary of anyone who calls themselves a feminist until they demonstrate that they're concerned with equality, not dominance.

I think that's about it. Though, imo, feminism is (or should be):

1. The recognition that society does not treat the sexes equally and this is bad.
2. Gender stereotypes and discrimination especially hurt women, but can also hurt men.
3. The sexes/genders are equal, and gender equality should be fought for.

Oppression affects women differently, depending on sexuality, gender presentation, skin color, religion, and whether or not they are disabled (physically and mentally). One woman can never presume to "understand" what another woman experiences. All voices must be listened to.

Basically: intersectionality is key.
