Re: Recs for a Dan Brown fan?

I don't know if his work has been translated into languages other than English, but try Matthew Reilley's Jack West books. Reilley is an Australian author, and this series (3 books so far) is all OTT thrillers with archaeological, military-technological, and Super Secret World Powers flavors. They're fast, easy reads, and make me think of what Indiana Jones would have been if written by Brown.

If he's interested in something more philosophical and much more heady, try "Foucault's Pendulum" or "The Name of the Rose" by Umberto Eco, an Italian author. Foucault especially has almost-identical roots to The Da Vinci Code but is more like reading a treatise on human behavior than reading a thriller. It's fascinating, though - the kind of story that really pulls you in.

Someone mentioned this already - I also think Crichton's books are worth considering, but he gets very specific in his science & technology (and of course most of his books are horribly out-of-date in that regard now), and since Brown is so into hand-wavey secret-society intrigue, they're very different in feeling although they're the same kind of thriller. Since I don't know your dad, I'd say look at them and then decide. "Sphere," IMO his best, is really un-Dan Brown-like, but is an interesting read anyway.

Of course there's "Holy Blood Holy Grail," the authors of which I believe sued Brown for plaigarism because Da Vinci Code was so similar to their book... beware though that HBHG tries to pass itself off as legitimate research and is written by people who are a but nutty.

Hope this late reply helps!
