I read a leaked script for this. Parts of it were changed, but from what I've heard and from the trailer parts of it made it into the final movie.

The script really sucked. I guess it sucks less if you're okay with completely retconning/not respecting at all the source material.

I have zero problems with taking an old fairytale and doing whatever you want with it.

Maleficent is very much based on the animated Sleeping Beauty movie, made by Disney. Disney can legally do whatever it wants with it, but I find it a bit disrespectful to take what's part of the company's history and twist it in that weird story I read.

From the little I've heard of the story my impression was "It's Wicked, only with a character Disney owns and no music." Is this accurate?

Is almost everyone not-a-dick in Wizard of Oz turned into a huge dick in Wicked? Because that's pretty much what I read.

in the book, yes; they were also made incredibly dull and the Wicked Witch is actually just a woobie. I haven't seen the musical.
