What do you do when one of your friends has turned into a SJW? :(

(Anonymous) 2013-12-17 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Online friend or offline?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-17 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
Both. Best friend from school, only see her online now.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-17 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, that makes it pretty awkward. I was going to say slowly back away and let her explode on her own, but if its a school friend that you actually want to keep being friends with - possibly start a conversation about it? Let her know she's gone a bit overboard?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-17 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
Shower her with movies/TV shows/video games/books recommendations. If you can, go outside with her. Either way she needs to get off of tumblr.

+1

Fresh air, fresh veggies, and talking with real live people, who will shut down her frantic antics in no time flat, when/if she tries to pull that garbage in the real world.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-17 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
I knew what this was and still I LOLed. Good thing I don't believe in hell eh?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-17 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
make popcorn

(Anonymous) 2013-12-17 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
maybe listen to them

(Anonymous) 2013-12-17 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
they know what they're talking about as much as rush limbaugh and his ilk do, so no

(Anonymous) 2013-12-17 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
I dunno, SJW to me implies that they tend to preach about things they don't fully understand and are unwilling to listen to reasonable arguments.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-17 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
Don't. Op, don't. Specially if they just started and are riding the outrage wave hard like a pro. There's zero chance of them actually being able to be thoughfull and balanced in their criticism if this is a new thing for them.

Most of the time I ditch them, but one I've kept -- I think it's mostly a coping mechanism for her, well that and alcohol :(

Unfortunately I'm having to constantly remind her that I'm not tumblr, because she's frequently jumping at me for one thing or another.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-17 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
Well you just sound like a fantastic friend.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-17 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
da

sounds like dethtoll is doing right by his friend and they've got more issues than just SJWism imo

You're goddamn right. She does have a tendency to misinterpret the most random and innocuous shit because she spends so much time on tumblr. I remember one time I said that homophobia and banning gay marriage were un-American (which of course they are -- even if this country has never ever successfully lived up to the ideal of equality, it was founded on that concept) and she jumped all over me. I think there's certain trigger words that just bring a reaction despite the fact that she KNOWS I'm not an MRA or other weirdo bigot troll. I don't even own a fedora.

Remember to never remind her that minority outside of the US doesn't mean "anyone who is none white", only drama can come from it.

He does.

The fuck are you on?
starphotographs: I like him. He kind of looks and acts like one of my characters. (I did not know this when I started liking him!) (Victor (...>:|))

It only happened to me once (with an online friend), and we just kind of drifted apart naturally. I stopped having much to comment about, because I don't really know/care much about that stuff, and then I migrated to DW.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-17 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
How much so? I went through a bit of a SJW phase before it had a term... sometimes my friends would hint that maybe I was taking things a bit far, and I generally saw their point. Eventually I grew out of it.

Also, you mentioned they're only really online now... can you find a way to reverse that? Limit online stuff but see them IRL? Generally speaking, people are calmer offline. Generally. Not always.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-17 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
No, we live across the country from each other now. :(

My sister is a SJW; the very adamant type. Like, all those stereotypes of Tumblr rolled into one. She means well, and I think she tries to actually educate herself on issues, which is good. She's just very much in the black and white "THIS PERSON said something that could be sort of construed as iffy, they are evil and awful!!!"

Idk, I just kind of smile and nod. She's trying.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-17 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
She'll grow out of it, if you're lucky; children only think in black-and-white terms because their brains are underdeveloped and they can't understand nuanced worldviews as yet.

Adults who can't understand nuanced worldviews, well, that's another problem.....

Sometimes, people go through a SJW phase when they first realize the depths of various social injustices and their mind is blown and they briefly think that they're rare enlightened glorious warriors in some war for people's minds. It's quite often that after a bit, they get a bit of perspective, realize they went a bit overboard and were looking at things too narrowly, and settle back into sanity.

I'd say just kind of ignore them, but not too rudely. Let them talk, don't attack them, and let them get it out of their system.
